Let's talk a little more about our program.

PM&R Scholars Virtual Residency Fair: Podcast
As a smaller program you get to know both the residents and attendings really well. It feels like a family, and we all have each other's best interests at heart on both an academic and personal level."

I chose the UC PM&R program because of the close-knit bond of the residents I experienced on interview day, the strong reputation in the program for MSK and EMG, and the success of the graduates in a wide array of sub-specialty areas upon graduation."
I knew that the program directors and attendings had our best interest at heart 100% of the time. The first priority is always our learning and making sure we have the best learning opportunities at our disposal, even if that means the attending has to write the progress notes that day. Most importantly the residents were all super cool and people I wanted to be around both inside and outside the hospital. "
Engaging faculty, driven colleagues, and opportunities to pursue my interests."
"Strong didactic component. Access to procedures. Small family- like environment. AND Mary is simply the best coordinator in the business."
It seemed like the perfect academic institution at which to pursue my clinical interests in Outpatient Neurorehab. I especially appreciated the unique positioning of our division in the larger Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine, which provides ample opportunities to collaborate with Neurologists!"
Number one is obviously how cool the residents are. Everyone has a great sense of humor and most importantly can appreciate a good sarcastic joke. We also have incredible MSK and ultrasound opportunities, great teachers in all areas of PM&R despite being a smaller program, and fantastic exposure to pediatric rehab at the world-renowned Cincinnati Children's!"
The residents are fantastic and always have each others' backs! It was also great to have the PGY1 year built in at UC. The internal medicine residents and attendings are wonderful too, and I felt very supported and well equipped during my intern year. And the cost of living in Cincinnati can't be beat!"
It’s such a collegial place to work. I love how we all pitch in to help one another whenever there’s a need. I deeply value the respect that our faculty give to one another and especially to the residents. And because I love being surrounded by other intelligent people eager to continue learning... the heart of academic medicine. If I had the choice to make again, I’d join UC PM&R in a heartbeat!"

What will PGY1 year be like?
  • PGY1: You will be working alongside Internal Medicine Residents at UC Medical Center. The 6 months of Internal Medicine include a mix of general wards, VA general wards, renal, cardiology, GI, etc. Orthopedics will include both inpatient and outpatient clinics with an option for OR experience if interested. Urology will include outpatient and OR experience (observing). It is a busy year but gives you the opportunity to meet friends and understand the hospital system!
What is half day continuity clinic?
  • As a PGY2, you will be new to the world of PM&R and it has a lot to offer! This half day clinic opportunity gives you a chance to explore any interests you may have within PM&R. Once a week you will attend the clinic of your choice. You can change the clinic at any time and are free to try several clinics throughout the year. This is an excellent, low pressure opportunity to help you identify your interests within the field.
What will Inpatient PM&R Service be like?
  • We will see patients 5 days a week (Monday-Friday) at The Drake Center (Located just North of Cincinnati). Our responsibilities include medical management in addition to working closely with excellent Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, and Case Management to work towards our patient's goals and functional recovery. The patient population includes a variety of diagnoses ranging from SCI, TBI, Stroke, Amputee, and Trauma patients.
What will PM&R Consults Service be like?
  • Consults will be performed at UC Medical Center. These consults will address spasticity management, agitation, baclofen management, etc. In addition, this will gives us the opportunity to meet patients at early onset of injury, promoting continuity of care and early intervention.
What will the Outpatient clinics be like?
  • The PM&R Outpatient Clinic is located at The Drake Center (Same as Inpatient Rehab). This office houses the MSK/Sports, Neurorehab, SCI, and Prosthetics & Orthotics clinic.  The Drake Center also houses the fluoroscopic suite.
    • MSK/Sports: Ultrasound guided joint injections, anatomically guided joint injections, Nerve Blocks
    • Prosthetics & Orthotics: Multi-disciplinary clinic for both medical management and evaluation/modification of prosthetics and orthotics
    • SCI: Multi-disciplinary clinic (Wound care, OBGYN, Urology) for management of spasticity, bowel, bladder, skin, pain, mood, and evaluation for equipment needs
    • Neurorehab: Exposure to management of chronic pain and migraines with neurology trained attending as well as excellent exposure to spasticiy management with medications, Botox injections, and baclofen pumps
What will the VA be like?
  • The Cincinnati VA is located on the same campus as UC Medical Center. You will complete a month of  medicine there during your first year and then return for PM&R rotations as a PGY2. PM&R services offered include MSK/Sports, Polytrauma, TBI, SCI, and Interventional Spine.
What exposure will I have to Interventional Spine Procedures?
  • Several attendings within the UC PM&R program perform interventional spine procedures. Procedures include Epidural Spinal Injections, Nerve Root Injections, Facet Joint Injections, SI Joint Injections, Medial Branch Blocks, Radiofrequency Ablations, MILD procedure, and Spinal Cord Stimulator Trials. A fluoroscopic suite is located at The Drake Center and at the VA.
